The Spartanburg County coroner released the name of the man who died in a crash on an Upstate highway Friday afternoon.

Palmer Wayne Lee, 68, of Woodruff, was pronounced dead just before 4 p.m. at Heritage Gardens Cemetery, where his vehicle came to rest, Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said.

South Carolina Highway Patrol officials said the crash occurred on Highway 221 at Canaan Road near Roebuck.

Lee was traveling north in a 2006 Chevrolet van on Highway 221 when he veered off the right side of the road, striking a fence and several trees, the Highway Patrol said.

Lee was wearing a seat belt and pronounced dead on the scene, Clevenger said. No other people were in the van.

The Spartanburg County coroner's office will perform an autopsy on Saturday.
