Ocean Township, NJ : 25-year-old Eatontown man died after car crashed into a utility pole on Route 35 in Monmouth County early Tuesday, December 29, 2015

A 25-year-old Eatontown man died early Tuesday after his car crashed into a utility pole on Route 35, police said.

Police received word of the crash at 1:25 a.m. and found that a 1995 Ford Mustang struck a pole on the northbound side of Route 35, near the intersection of Herbert Avenue.

Malik J. Edwards, 25, of Eatontown, the sole occupant of the Mustang, suffered fatal injuries in the crash, police said.

A preliminary investigation indicates that Edwards was traveling north on Route 35 when he lost control of the vehicle, which left the road and struck the pole.

Lt. Kevin L. Faller described the collision as "high impact,'' and added, "It was pretty horrific.''

He said it was raining when the crash occurred, and the weather may have contributed.

Faller did not know where Edwards was coming from or where he was headed when he got into the fatal accident.

But the victim's brother, Ryan Brinson of Neptune, said that was the route Edwards usually took home from his girlfriend's house in Ocean Township.

Faller said he did not know if speed or any other factors may have played a part.

Police are unaware of any witnesses to the accident but are asking anyone who may have seen it to call the Ocean Township Police Department's Traffic Safety Bureau at 732-531-1800.

The crash is being investigated by Officer Alisa Martinez of the Traffic Safety Bureau, who responded to the accident with officers Luke Sciallo, Steven Walker, Zachary Rhein, Gregory Martone and Sgts. Paul Flammia and Todd Gregory.
