Phoenix,AZ : UC Berkeley sophomore killed in car crash that left 4 dead on December, Saturday 30th 2017
A fatal car crash that occurred Dec. 22 claimed four lives, including that of UC Berkeley sophomore Justin Yeo Jun Xi.
On the day of the accident, Yeo, 22, was traveling to the Grand Canyon with family members when their silver Hyundai allegedly crossed the painted median and collided with a green Dodge van. After colliding with the Dodge, the Hyundai then crashed into a third vehicle.
Yeo, his father, Yeo Heng Soon, 62, and his mother, Chua Cher Hwee, 56, were pronounced dead at the scene. His younger sister, Justlyn Yeo Jing Hui, 19, was the sole survivor in the family’s car.
The driver of the Dodge, Victor Colldeforms Pren, 43, of Spain, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A total of five people, including four passengers in the Dodge, were injured, according to an Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesperson. There were no reported injuries from the third vehicle.
Yeo was a Singapore Armed Forces scholar and one of the top A-level graduates of Dunman High School in 2013.
As an undergraduate, Yeo co-founded the app Dingo, which allows users to automatically notify friends when they have reached their intended destination. He also recently joined an entrepreneurship fraternity.
Justlyn Yeo Jing Hui is a first-year student at Nanyang Technological University’s Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information. She has reportedly undergone spinal surgery and is in stable condition.
A stretch of Arizona state Route 64 was closed for seven hours after the car crash to allow for investigations.
