Melrose, MA : Melrose driver arrested for OUI following fatal crash in Malden on Thursday, December 22nd 2016
An elderly woman died Thursday night in Malden after being struck by a pick-up truck on East Border Road.
Police responded just after 7:30 p.m. to a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian at the intersection of East Boarder Road and Woodland Road, according to Massachusetts State Police.
The pedestrian was transported to Melrose-Wakefield hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said.
Kenneth Schlesinger, 63, of Melrose was reportedly placed under arrest for operating under the influence of liquor. He was booked at the State Police barracks in Medford and held pending bail. He will be arraigned in Malden District court Friday, State Police said.
Police said Schlesinger was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck when his vehicle struck the pedestrian.
State Police declined to reveal the victim's identity, pending family notification. Images from the scene showed an overturned cart full of cans that the victim had been pushing when she was struck.
The crash remains under investigation. State Police were assisted on scene by Malden Police, Fire, and EMS.
