Martinez, CA : One person died in Fatal car crash on Interstate 680 near Benicia Bridge on Sunday, March 13, 2016

A person who sustained major injuries in a crash that closed several lanes of southbound Interstate 680 for almost an hour has died, the California Highway Patrol said Sunday.

The crash, first reported at 3:11 p.m., involved a red Chevrolet Suburban and a black Toyota just off the George Miller Jr. Memorial bridge and north of the Marina Vista Avenue exit, a CHP dispatcher said.

Paramedics and Contra Costa Fire Department personnel assisted in the response, and a person was taken to Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez with major injuries, the dispatcher said.

The CHP issued a traffic alert closing two right-hand lanes of southbound I-680 at 3:51 p.m., and reopening them at 4:49 p.m.
