Atmore, AL : 1 dead in chase after suspicious vehicle flees from near AL prison on Wednesday, October 12, 2016

One person is dead and two others are injured after a police chase ended with a crash involving a suspicious vehicle near the G.K. Fountain Correctional Facility in Atmore, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections.

DOC spokesman Bob Horton said correctional officers noticed the suspicious vehicle with two people inside around noon Wednesday. The car was just beyond the facility's barrier fence. Officers reported that the car fled after someone tossed a package over the fence.

DOC investigators chased the vehicle for more than 30 minutes along Alabama Highway 21 and Interstate 65. The suspects' vehicle fled south along the interstate until the driver attempted to exit onto Alabama Highway 59. The speeding car collided with an SUV on the off-ramp around 12:40 p.m.

The passenger, Clint Travis Hunley, 36, of Foley, was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver, Jody Lynn Mikel, 26, of Trafford, was treated for minor injuries. The driver of the second vehicle was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Alabama State Troopers are investigating the crash. Meanwhile, authorities at the prison recovered the package Hunley threw over the fence. Horton said it contained 25 cell phones, cell phone chargers, and 183 grams of synthetic marijuana.

Mikel is charged with reckless murder and faces additional charges for prohibited activity on prison property, trafficking a controlled substance, and promoting prison contraband.
