Brunswick, ME : Woman killed in I-295 crash in Brunswick on Thursday, September 28th 2017
State Police say an elderly woman died Thursday night when her car slammed into a bridge abutment on Interstate 295 in Brunswick.
Troopers said the woman, in her late 70s, was driving her car in the wrong lane, likely driving south in the northbound lane from Topsham.
The car then veered into the median and struck the Pleasant Street overpass bridge abutment. A team of troopers and Brunswick and Freeport police shut down the northbound lanes at the Brunswick exit near the crash site.
The LifeFlight helicopter landed in the roadway but the woman died of her injuries at the scene and the helicopter did not transport her.
Brunswick Fire Department was dispatched to the crash at 7:25 p.m. Captain Matt Barnes said Freeport Fire Department responded with an engine as well providing additional manpower. Barnes said although rescue personnel did everything they could, their patient succumbed to her injuries.
The north- and southbound lanes of I-295 were closed so the helicopter could land, he said.
State Police expect to release the name of the driver Friday.
