Detroit ,MI :84-year-old grandmother survives wild crash with Detroit police cruiser on Tuesday night ,September 15th 2015
“I said oh Lord, what in the world is happening to me. It happened so quick.”
That's what 84-year-old Bessie Stallworth said was going through her mind Tuesday night when her minivan was hit by a Detroit police squad car.
It happened at the intersection of Livernois Avenue and Curtis Street on Detroit’s west side. Police say the squad car was responding to a call when it hit Stallworth’s minivan.
"I stopped for the light," Stallworth said. "The light changed and I came on across and all of a sudden something hit me like a train. I didn’t know what had hit me. And they had to be going about 80 or 90 miles an hour."
One day later, Stallworth says she’s in a lot of pain. She is swollen and has a few scratches and bruises. She had four bibles in the car that day. One of which landed on her lap after the impact.
"It was down on the side," Stallworth said. "I guess it just come over and flipped."
She says God was protecting her that night and that’s what saved her life.
"That’s the only thing I know to do is to pray and I think that’s the reason," she said. "I’m very sore. I thank the Lord that I don’t have any bones broken."
Stallworth says the police cruiser did not have its lights or sirens on. Police said Tuesday that the squad car had its lights on and turned on the siren while approaching the intersection.
The official police report has not yet been released.
