Peterborough, N.H : Man suffers head injury when rock crashes through windshield on Thursday, December 4, 2014
Peterborough, New Hampshire
A man riding on Route 202 was in surgery Thursday after a large rock smashed through the windshield of the car he was in, knocking him unconscious.
Firefighters said Patrick Rushalko, 26, was driving south on Route 202 in Peterborough about 7:45 a.m. Thursday when a rock the size of a small football went through his windshield, striking passenger Adam Lecomte, 27, in the head.
Lecomte suffered serious injuries and was flown to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts. Rushalko was not injured.
Peterborough Fire Chief Ed Walker said rocks fall on cars all the time, but this case is much more serious.
"It was a very unique call," Walker said. "Vehicles get hit by rocks all the time, but this was a big enough rock that it made it through the windshield and was able to strike the passenger."
Investigators said they believe the rock fell off another vehicle. Police said they are searching for a truck that was traveling on Jaffrey Road, or Route 202, between 7:15 and 8 a.m. Thursday.
