Boxelder County, UT : 23-year-old Utah State University student killed in a multi-vehicle crash in Sardine Canyon near Mantua on Wednesday morning, December 30, 2015

An accident near Mantua Wednesday morning killed a 23-year-old West Jordan man and closed Sardine Canyon, US-89/91, for several hours.

Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Lee Perry said Joshua T. Diamond was driving a white 2003 Suzuki SUV northeast. Near mile-post 5 he lost control of the vehicle and slid into the southwest lanes of travel. He was struck broadside by a red 2016 KW semi-truck hauling a container trailer, travelling the opposite direction.

A 2012 black Mercedes SUV was following the semi and slid into the white SUV and then hit the left rear corner of the semi-trailer.

Lee said troopers believe Diamond was killed instantly. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi was taken to Logan Regional Hospital and checked for injuries. The two people in the black SUV were also taken to Brigham City Community Hospital and later released.

The crash occurred around 8:30 a.m. and blocked both directions of travel along the highway. Troopers closed the canyon for several hours while they investigated the accident and cleared the vehicles.

Roads at the time of the crash were icy and snow covered. Lee said Diamond was obviously driving way too fast for the winter conditions.
