STEUBENVILLE, OH : Fatal crash reported on Sunset on Monday, October, 30th 2017
The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported speed was a factor when a car went off Sunset Boulevard, just west of Negley Avenue, early Monday morning, and then hit a driveway retaining wall, spun around and came to rest against a garage wall.
A passenger, Troy M. Albritton, 23, of Steubenville was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver, Brandi N. Otis, 22, of Steubenville, was seriously injured, according to the patrol. Otis was flown by medical helicopter to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center — Presbyterian, where she was listed in critical condition on Monday, the patrol reported.
Patrol Lt. James Faunda said the accident is believed to have happened around 2:30 a.m. on Monday, according to a witness who heard what sounded like a crash. The car wasn’t discovered until 6:04 a.m., when the city police and fire departments were dispatched.
Faunda said to motorists driving by, the wreckage would have appeared to be a car parked in the driveway. He said people were home inside the house where the crash occurred but were sleeping and didn’t hear anything.
Faunda said the car, which was traveling west on Sunset Boulevard, went through landscaping adjacent to the road before hitting the concrete retaining wall and spinning 180 degrees. A landscape rock still was under the rear tire. The car’s doors were removed by the fire department to free the two people inside.
A child’s car seat was found outside the vehicle, leading firefighters to use a thermal imaging camera to search for a child who may have been inside the vehicle, Faunda said. He said city officers were able to confirm the child was safe with a family member, who had the child overnight. Other child car seats still were inside the vehicle.
Drug paraphernalia and suspected crack cocaine were found inside the vehicle, according to Faunda.
A highway patrol accident-reconstruction crew was at the scene.
Faunda noted the driver and passenger were not wearing seat belts.
