Car crash in Washington Parish kills driver without seatbelt

A Franklinton woman was thrown from her car and killed after losing control of her vehicle while not wearing a seatbelt.Just before 1 p.m. on Nov. 22, troopers responded to the call of a single-vehicle accident on La. 436 near Acys Church. They found that Jackie Cotton was traveling eastbound on La. 436 when she lost control of her car. Her car traveled into the westbound lane of traffic and Cotton over-corrected, causing her car to go off road and strike a tree. Cotton was thrown from her car on impact.Cotton was taken to the Riverside Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.Troopers noted that Cotton was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash. Alcohol is not expected to be a factor in the accident, but toxicology reports are pending.Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seatbelt use. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle regardless of seating position, always to remain buckled up. Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Taking the time to buckle up before every trip is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
