GREENVILLE, SC : Greenville police said two people were killed and three were injured when a tractor trailer crash on Friday, June 2, 2017
Greenville, South Carolina
Greenville police said two people were killed and three were injured when a tractor trailer crashed into traffic that was stopped in the roadway along Interstate 385 Friday morning.
The crash happened near the Woodruff Road exit in the Gateway Project construction zone just after 5 a.m.
Chief Ken Miller said one tractor trailer, a white pickup truck, and a car were stopped on I-385 likely due to construction happening overnight. Another tractor trailer approached and struck the vehicles from behind. First, the tractor trailer struck the pickup truck, sending it tumbling down the embankment. Next, the tractor trailer hit the car and pushed it under the parked tractor trailer.
The driver and front seat passenger of the car died at the scene. Miller said another passenger was transported to the hospital with severe injuries.
The coroner later identified the driver of the vehicle, 40-year-old Dorothy Michelle Carroll, and the front seat passenger, 50-year-old Jesse Robert Carroll, both from Greenville. The driver died of blunt force trauma to the head and the passenger died of multiple blunt force injuries.
The driver has also been identified but the identity is not being released until the coroner's office notifies the victim's next of kin.
Troopers say the driver of the pickup was also injured and taken to the hospital in stable condition. Miller said the pickup truck absorbed much of the impact and the absorption likely saved the driver's life.
Lt. Jason Rampey said one of the truck drivers was also injured in the crash.
Southbound lanes were blocked for hours after the crash but later reopened. The Greenville Police Department's Accident Reconstruction Team was called in to investigate.
There's no word yet if charges will be filed.
