A California man was identified as the victim in a fatal semi crash near Mound City on Wednesday, according to a news release.

58-year-old Rafael Lopez, from Bloomington, California, was driving a 2014 International semi-truck on U.S. Highway 83 — about two miles south of Mound City — when he struck the corner of a 2004 Peterbilt semi-truck with a 30-foot wide load around 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday, according to South Dakota Highway Patrol.

31-year-old David Thompson, from Milbank, wasn't injured in the crash. Lopez was found dead on scene. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts, according to a news release.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
