Bluefield, VA : Two people injured in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 460 and Commerce Drive on Tuesday, April 19, 2016

Two people were hospitalized Tuesday following a collision between a Jeep Liberty and a Labcorp vehicle on U.S. Route 460 near the Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse.

The crash was reported at 10:43 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. Route 460 and Commerce Drive in Bluefield, Va., according to Sgt. Tim Carroll of the Bluefield, Va. Police Department.

Carroll said the Labcorp vehicle, which was a Volkswagen Jetta operated by Timothy Wayne Booth, 50, of Bluefield, was turning east bound from Commerce Lane. As the vehicle turned eastbound on Route 460, and just about when it entered the right side of the lane heading eastbound, a Jeep Liberty operated by Michael Shane Mitchem, 34, of Bluefield, came up from behind at a high rate of speed and struck the Labcorp vehicle, according to Carroll. The Jeep Liberty then rolled about three times on Route 460 before coming to a stop.

Both Mitchem and Booth were transported to Bluefield Regional Medical Center following the crash.

Carroll said Mitchem was later airlifted to Charleston Area Medical Center. His condition was considered serious.

Carroll said Mitchem also had been involved in two other unrelated automobile accidents in Virginia within just the last 24 hours.

Carroll said Booth sustained only minor injuries. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Charges are pending as the investigation continues. Carroll said the Jeep Liberty was the at-fault vehicle in the crash. Officer Paul Rogers, also of the Bluefield, Va. Police Department, is assisting with the investigation.

The Bluefield, Va. Rescue Squad, Bluefield Rescue Squad and Bluefield, Va. Fire Department also responded to the crash.
