Yuma, AZ : 2 hurt in Somerton collision; other accidents reported on Monday, December 5th, 2016

Two people were transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center Monday afternoon for injuries they sustained following a head-on collision at the intersection of County 19th and Avenue B.

According to the Somerton/Cocopah Fire Department, the collision occurred at 2:08 p.m. and involved a red mid-sized SUV and a full-sized black sedan.

When they arrived, the driver of the black sedan was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by hydraulic spreaders (Jaws of Life) because the driver’s side door had been “jammed due to the force of the wreck,” according to Chief Paul De Anda. His vehicle was found to be without airbags, and he was placed on a heart monitor because he struck and bent the vehicle’s steering column with his chest.

The driver was examined by paramedics before his removal, and had lacerations to his head and mouth, and sustained a possible hip dislocation. He was transported to YRMC by the Somerton/Cocopah Fire Department.

De Anda said that in transport, paramedics said the driver was disoriented and may have suffered a concussion. His condition is unknown.

The driver of the red SUV had extricated himself from the vehicle and was lying face up on the roadway next to it when fire personnel arrived on scene. He complained of pain to his hip and ankle, and was transported to YRMC by Rural/Metro Fire.

Both drivers were placed in full cervical spine precautions and immobilized on backboards.

A bystander said the red SUV was traveling northbound on County 19th when it tried to turn westbound into the path of the southbound black sedan, which the department said would have had the right of way.

Earlier in the day, at 5:53 a.m., Somerton/Cocopah responded to a motor vehicle accident at Avenue I and Highway 95 at the County 16½ extension near Gadsden where the driver ended up rolling his vehicle into the canal.

The driver refused transportation to YRMC, and told first responders that he managed to roll down his window as the vehicle sunk into the canal and he swam out from the driver’s seat. The cause of the accident is unknown, and De Anda said the driver told Somerton/Cocopah that he didn’t know what happened.

A third accident occurred in the early morning hours at approximately 3:29 a.m. at County 19th and Avenue G.

Upon arrival, Somerton/Cocopah found a flipped pickup truck that had struck a power pole, knocking it over. After being examined by paramedics, the driver chose to not be transported to the hospital.

The reason for that accident is also unknown.
