Las Vegas, NV : 78-year-old man dead and woman faces a DUI charge after a crash on South Maryland Parkway near Gehring Elementary School on Wednesday, Oct 7, 2015
A 78-year-old Las Vegas man is dead and a woman faces a DUI charge after a car left a south valley road and struck him while he walked on the sidewalk.
It happened about 6:55 a.m. Wednesday on South Maryland Parkway near Gehring Elementary School.
Two Las Vegas men, one 75 and the other 78, were walking along Maryland between Richmar and Gary avenues, Metro Detective Rich Tusko told reporters. A Honda Civic jumped the curb and hit both men, dragging one of them. The car struck a wall, then stopped.
Police identified the man who died as Richard Glen Bryan. His body was still in the road at 8 a.m. as children arrived at Gehring Elementary.
The second man was taken to the Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in critical condition.
"It appears they do not know each other," Tusko said of the pedestrians. "They just happened to be walking there at the same time."
Clark County School District police Capt. Ken Young said students were using alternative entrances Wednesday, which was "National Walk Your Kids to School Day."
Nicole Johnson, 30, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Maryland Parkway was closed between Richmar and Gary for nearly six hours while police investigated.
This is the 83rd traffic-related fatality in Metro's jurisdiction this year, police said Wednesday afternoon in a news release.
