Gaffney,SC : 12-year-old Wellford girl was killed in a crash on I-85 in the Gaffney Sunday night, August 2nd 2015

The Cherokee County coroner said a 12-year-old Wellford girl was killed in a crash on I-85 in the Gaffney area Sunday night.

Troopers with the SC Highway Patrol said the collision occurred on I-85 North near mile marker 95 just before 10 p.m.

Coroner Dennis Fowler said Daffney Fowler of Dodd Street in Wellford died at the scene.

Daffney was riding in the back seat of a Nissan sedan that was rear-ended by an SUV, Fowler said.

Fowler said the Nissan was stopped in the roadway when the Chevy Trail Blazer rear-ended the sedan, which sent the Nissan crashing into a guard rail on the right side of the road. The Nissan eventually came to rest in the median.

Daffney was wearing a seat belt, Fowler said.

Two other children in the car were hurt and taken to the GHS Children's Hospital for treatment, Fowler said.

Troopers said the driver, a 41-year-old man, and an adult passenger, a 35-year-old female, were transported to the hospital with injuries.

The driver of the SUV, a 49-year-old man from Blacksburg, was also hurt and transported to the hospital, troopers said.
