Duarte, CA : 22-year-old man killed in big rig collision on 210 Freeway in Irwindale on Monday, March 30, 2015
A 22-year-old San Francisco man was killed Monday when his car struck him after it was hit by a big rig on the eastbound 210 Freeway, west of Highland Avenue, authorities said.
Coroner’s officials haven’t released the dead man’s name pending notification of his relatives.
A caller reported a stalled vehicle on the freeway at 1:27 a.m.
California Highway Patrol Sgt. Mike Dulong said a 2015 Toyota Prius was heading eastbound on the 210 Freeway earlier when it veered to the right and collided with the sound wall.
The disabled Prius ended up in the No. 3 lane. He said the driver got out and started walking around the car .
The driver of a tractor trailer traveling about 55 mph didn’t see the Prius until it was too late, according to the CHP.
Dulong said the truck driver swerved but the trailer collided with the car. The impact pushed the Prius forward into the 22-year-old.
He was thrown into the No. 2 lane. Dulong said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
A witness told the CHP another car also struck the man.
The CHP initially thought the incident was a hit-and-run.
Someone got the license plate of a Honda Accord seen in the area. Officers traced the plate to Glendora where they found a Honda Accord with a front end damage. A man was arrested but later released when it was determined he wasn’t involved in the fatal collision, according to Dulong.
He said the damage on the Accord was old. The man was also driving the Accord slowly on the freeway because it was using a spare tire, he added.
Five lanes on the eastbound 210 were closed for two and a half hours due to the fatal crash.
The 48-year-old Tulare man driving the big rig wasn’t arrested. Dulong said the crash is still under investigation.
