Columbia, SC : Bus crash in Harleyville sends five students to hospital on Thursday, March 16th 2017
Five high school students were transported to Trident Medical Center Thursday morning after a school bus crash in Harleyville, said Dorchester County officials.
According to a press release, the Woodland High School students suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the incident, which happened around 7:30 a.m. on East Main Street.
The bus was stopped, headed to the high school, when a vehicle ran in to the back of it, the release said.
Both drivers were also taken to the hospital, and six additional students were treated on scene, according to county officials.
In the release Dorchester County EMS Director Doug Warren praised first responders for their quick response.
"This incident had the potential to be much worse. I am proud of the swift response and professionalism shown by all agencies involved," Warren said.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the bus has been charged with driving too fast for conditions, according to Lance Cpl. Matt Southern with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the lead agency investigating the incident.
Additional responding agencies Thursday included Dorchester County Sheriff's Office, Harleyville Police and Dorchester County Fire and Rescue.
