Asheboro, NC : Two Thomasville-area residents hurt in wreck on U.S. 64 west of town on Sunday night, May 22, 2016

Two Thomasville-area residents were injured Sunday night in a one-car accident on U.S. 64 west of town.

Bonnie Newcomb, 42, and a passenger, Adam Stephens, 33, were westbound in a Pontiac G6 shortly after 9 p.m. when the vehicle ran off the road and traveled about 100 feet down an embankment, according to Trooper Ken Burroughs of the N.C. Highway Patrol. The wreck occurred between Club View Drive and Moore Road, about 3 miles west of Asheboro.

Newcomb was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Stephens was transported to Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.

“According to what I hear, she’s going to be fine,” Burroughs said. “I think he was treated and released. They were very fortunate. The damage to the vehicle was pretty bad. They were entrapped, and it took several minutes to get them out and up the hill.”

The accident is still under investigation, but Burroughs said alcohol was not a factor and that he does not think speed was either.
