Statesboro, GA : Woman strips in median after wreck on Monday, January 2nd 2017

All lanes of Interstate 16 were closed temporarily late Monday afternoon after a woman stripped off her clothes following a three-vehicle wreck.

Georgia State Patrol Trooper 1st Class Kane Smith said he ordered the lanes closed out of consideration for “families” so they would not witness the disturbing scene. The accident took place around 4 p.m. Monday near the 121 mile marker, he said.

Angela Carter, 30, of Whitefield Avenue in Savannah, was likely under the influence of an intoxicant and agreed at the scene to submit to blood tests, he said. Final charges will be filed pending the outcome of those tests, he said.

Witnesses told Smith that Carter was driving a white Porsche recklessly, passing cars in the westbound emergency lane, and “seemed to be impaired,” he said. In trying to pass an 18-wheeler, she came too close to the trailer and struck it. She then crossed the median into the eastbound lanes and struck another vehicle, sending it into the tree line, he said.

The driver of the 18-wheeler felt the impact and pulled over, uninjured. The driver and passenger of the second vehicle hit by Carter’s car also were uninjured, despite crashing into a tree, Smith said.

Carter “voluntarily exited her car” that had come to a rest in the median and “began to unclothe herself,” he said. She was bleeding from facial lacerations and head injuries sustained after striking the windshield upon impact with the other vehicles, as she had not been wearing a seat belt, he said.

Carter was “in an altered mental state” and was airlifted to a Savannah hospital by Air Evac. She was “very combative” and “scratched up an EMT” with Bulloch County EMS who tried to assist her, Smith said.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Carter remained in the hospital, but she is charged with DUI, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, seat belt violation and obstruction of emergency personnel. Additional charges are possible, he said.

The accident was one of several along that stretch of Interstate 16 over the holiday weekend, Smith said.
