The Kershaw County Coroner says a teen injured in a crash Monday night has died.

Coroner David West tells WIS that 17-year-old Robert Edmond David, IV, who was known as Drew, died at 1 a.m. Thursday in the hospital. He had been on life support after he was thrown from a vehicle in a crash on Sunny Hill Drive in Camden Monday night.

Camden police said the crash is under investigation.

Mary Ann Byrd with the Kershaw County School District said Drew was about to begin his senior year at Camden High School. He was a member of the school's football and baseball teams.

West said Drew was a passenger in the vehicle. Two other students in the car survived the crash.

The Camden high football team has been practicing since the end of July and Coach Jimmy Neal says the players and practices have not been the same since Tuesday.

"It was a very quiet locker room for two straight days, actually three including today," said Neal.

Drew was the starting wide receiver for the Bulldogs and was expected to be a big contributor again this year.

"He was a guys guy- he was outgoing and very personable," Neal said. "Everybody wanted to hang around with he was a fun guy."

Camden High School will have counselors available when students get back to class in about 10 days. Principal Dan Matthews says there are counselors currently available for athletes who are already practicing for the upcoming season.

The news has hit students and faculty very hard, including Principal Matthews who says he's known David his entire life.

"There were so many kids at the hospital they had to move them to the auditorium," Matthews said. "There were 150 kids in the waiting room."

After learning of Drew's passing this morning, Matthews said, "Now the focus is how do we support those who are left and try to bring some kind of positive out of a negative."

Part of that positive is remembering Drew’s life.

"Drew loved life," Matthews said. "Every day, had a smile on his face. Every day he rung all he could out of the day. At the end of the day he must have been tired cause he had a great time with every day."

Another is the outpouring of love from the community, including for the football team.

"We've been just loaded down with condolences," Neil said holding back tears. "It's been very humbling, very neat. We were supposed to scrimmage with Fort Dorchester on Friday and we think we're gonna to do that- but their coach talked to them about it and their players want to do something for us. It's an amazing world."

A world in which Drew leaves a lasting impact. Family members say as an organ donor, seven of Drew’s organs will be used to save the lives of others.

It’s what they call the silver-lining in a tragedy that’s left the extended Kershaw family heartbroken.
