Long Beach, CA : 23-year-old man struck, killed by a car on Interstate 605 in Long Beach on Tuesday night, December 15, 2015

The California Highway Patrol says a 23-year-old man was struck by a car and killed after running onto Interstate 605 in Long Beach.

CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos says the driver of a BMW swerved but couldn't avoid hitting Jesus Esparza late Tuesday night.

Esparza's body was found on the southbound side of the freeway, which had several lanes shut down for hours during an investigation.

Investigators will try to determine why the young man from Hawaiian Gardens was running in lanes.
