81-year-old Eugene man dies in crash Near Oregon
Interstate 5 traffic came to a halt near the Highway 58 interchange Friday so an air ambulance could land near the scene of a serious injury crash.
Officials said the 81-year-old driver, later identified as Eugene-resident Beauvais Randall, died from his injuries before the air ambulance could take him from the scene.
The crash happened at around 11:15 a.m. Friday when a northbound 1987 Volkswagen van slowly started drifting off the roadway. State police said the van then went into a roll, stopping on its left side near a stand of trees just before the Highway 58 exit.
First responders worked to free the driver from the overturned van as an air ambulance stood by on the interstate.
Emergency personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene before he could be taken to a hospital, officials reported.
Department of Transportation officials said that I-5 closed at around 11:40 a.m. so an air ambulance could land. One lane of I-5 northbound was back open before 1 p.m., and all lanes were reopened by 2:15 p.m.
