Great Bend, KS : Three adults and two children injured in two-vehicle collision on U.S. 281 in Barton County on Thursday morning, February 19, 2015

Three adults suffered severe injuries and two children minor injuries in a head-on collision Thursday morning south of Great Bend on U.S. 281.
According to a release from the Barton County Sheriff's Department's Brian J. Bellendir, at about 10:15 a.m., deputies were dispatched south of town on the curves near 20th Road, where Lafe Kern, 26, St. John was driving southbound in a 2005 Ford Explorer.
Kern reportedly crossed the center lane and nearly struck an oncoming vehicle, but a second vehicle, a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Heather Cash, 29, Pratt, was unable to avoid Kern and struck him head-on.
Kern was alone in the Explorer, but there were three passengers in Cash's Tahoe, Candace Lampe, 52, Pratt, and Cash's two children, ages 3 years and 8 1/2 months.
The children were restrained in child safety devices and only sustained minor injuries.
The three adults, however, all had to be extracted out of their vehicle by the Great Bend Fire Department and were taken to Great Bend Regional Hospital for injuries. They were then flown to Wichita-area hospitals.
As of 4:45 Thursday, Kern was listed in serious condition. Cash was listed as critical. Lampe's condition was unavailable.
U.S. 281 was closed for about an hour and a half while emergency crews were on the scene.
It is unknown why Kern crossed over into oncoming traffic, but the accident is under investigation by the sheriff's department, which was assisted on the scene by the Kansas Highway Patrol, GBFD and the Kansas Department of Transportation.
