One person was killed Tuesday afternoon when a semi struck a car in southeast Kansas, authorities said.

The crash was reported at 12:44 p.m. on US-169 highway, about 8 miles north of Coffeyville.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2003 Mazda Protege that was westbound on Montgomery County Road 2800 failed to yield at a stop sign as it tried to turn north onto US-169.

A 2011 Peterbilt semi-trailer that was northbound on US-169 then broadsided the Mazda, which came to rest in the highway’s median. The semi continued across the median, traveled across the southbound lanes of US-169 and came to rest in the west ditch.

The Mazda’s driver, Janice Vineyard, 67, of Independence, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was the vehicle’s only occupant and was wearing a seat belt, the patrol said.

The semi’s driver, Casey Gordon, 37, of Tecumseh, wasn’t injured. He was wearing a seat belt.
