Houston, TX : Driver loses control, lands van in bayou near downtown early Wednesday morning July 9th 2014
Emergency rescuers responded to White Oak Bayou on Houston’s north side early Wednesday after a van crashed into the water.
It happened around 6:40 a.m. near the North Freeway and Cavalcade.
The victims, seven adult males, crawled to the roof of the vehicle following the crash. While the water only went up to the hood of the van, some of the men appeared to be injured.
Houston Fire Department rescuers extended a ladder, and some of the men crawled across to safety. Others wore life vests and were put into rafts.
Ambulances took all of the men to the hospital.
Officials said the men were heading to a nearby construction site at the time of the crash.
One witness said the van was speeding when it hit the guardrail, went over the side, and into the water.
The extent of the injuries involved was not immediately known, but views from Air 11 showed that all of the men appeared to be alert and conscious.
