La Crosse, WI : Bicyclist critically injured in Vernon County crash on Tuesday, January, 2nd 2018

A bicyclist on a Vernon County highway was hit by a vehicle Tuesday morning, with the bicyclist suffering life-threatening injuries.

The crash happened at about 8:20 a.m. on Highway WW in the town of Hillsboro, the Sheriff's Office said.

Gary Cepek, 66, of Hillsboro, was riding his bicycle south on Highway WW with a vehicle driven by Mitchael Beckwith, 20, of Hillsboro, behind him.

"Beckwith was driving into the sun and did not see the bicyclist," said Sheriff John Spears. "The Beckwith vehicle struck the bicyclist, causing him to be thrown off the bike and down an embankment."

Cepek was taken by ambulance to Gundersen St. Joseph Hospital in Hillsboro, then flown by helicopter to Gundersen Health in La Crosse.

The crash remains under investigation.
