RAYNHAM, MA : New Bedford man killed in Raynham crash on Wednesday, January 11th 2017

A New Bedford man died after crashing underneath an overpass on Route 495 in Raynham Wednesday morning.

The crash happened shortly after 7 a.m. on the northbound side of the highway near Exit 8, at Route 138. The 37-year-old, driving a sedan, struck the corner of the bridge abutment, Raynham Fire Chief James Januse said.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Cory Medeiros indicates "for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle traveled across all lanes and struck a bridge abutment off the left side of the roadway," state police said in a press release. The man was driving a 2003 Honda Accord.

State Police and fire departments from Raynham and Bridgewater responded to the single-car crash.

Before paramedics could arrive, two off-duty firefighters from Attleboro and Wareham saw the crash and stopped and pulled the victim from the car and administered CPR, Januse said.

"The two firefighters began first and resuscitation efforts while awaiting EMS," state police said.

The driver, and lone occupant, was taken by ambulance to Morton Hospital in Taunton and pronounced dead a short time later.

The right, middle and breakdown lanes were closed on the northbound side for about 2 hours as the crash was investigated.

The vehicle was towed and the road was cleared by 9 a.m.

The victim's identity was withheld by authorities pending notification of family.
