Kankakee, IL : One person confirmed dead in I-57 wreck near Manteno on Wednesday, September 20th 2017
One person died and two other people suffered life-threatening injuries as a result of a crash involving two semi-tractor trailers and a car on southbound Interstate 57, a mile south of Manteno on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Illinois State Police District 21 at Ashkum, one semi was slowing to a stop in the construction zone. The car behind the semi also slowed.
The driver of the second semi did not slow down and ran into the back of the car, causing it to run into the back of the other semi.
Kankakee County Chief Deputy Coroner Eric Cavender said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The person was in the back seat.
The car's driver was transported to Presence St. Mary’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The front seat passenger was airlifted to Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn with life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the semi that hit the car was taken to Riverside Medical Center for evaluation.
The other semi driver was taken to St. Mary's with non-life threatening injuries.
No names are being released at this time.
Firefighters and paramedics from five agencies were called to the scene at 1:07 p.m.
Southbound traffic was diverted off I-57 at the Manteno 322 Exit.
