Hot Springs, AR : Two Hot Springs women were injured in a fiery crash at 5100 block of Central Avenue On Friday, July 8th, 2016

Two Hot Springs women were injured Friday morning when their vehicles collided in the 5100 block of Central Avenue, causing one vehicle to catch fire and blocking traffic for about an hour.

Around 10 a.m., Shirley Scott, 76, driving a 2009 Hyundai Sonata, was northbound on Central negotiating a curve to the right when she crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a southbound 2014 Chevrolet Camaro

driven by Leagh Ecklund, 41, according to Arkansas State Police Cpl. Kevin Steed, who investigated the wreck.

The impact caused the Camaro to roll onto its top and catch fire, Steed said, noting the both women were injured. Scott was transported by LifeNet to CHI St. Vincent Hot Springs while Ecklund was taken by private vehicle to a

local hospital.

Lake Hamilton Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the car fire and assisted with the cleanup. The Hot Springs Fire Department provided mutual aid by responding to a separate fire called in at the same

time in the 300 block of Long Island Drive, in the county, freeing up LHFD personnel to continue with the incident on Central.

Hot Springs police also responded to the scene in addition to Arkansas State Police to assist with traffic, which Steed noted was affected for about an hour.

Garland County Environmental Inspections Department Officer Robert Terry applied Oil Dri, a cat litter-like absorbent material, and used a boom to capture oil, gasoline and antifreeze that escaped from the wreck, due to the

proximity to Lake Hamilton. Garland County Emergency Management Director Bo Robertson said the road was hosed down and more Oil Dri applied after the wreck was cleared.

He said absorbent pads were also used to soak up the fluids.
