Washington County, WI : Van crashes, bursts into flames on Highway 45 in Washington County on Friday, October 17, 2014
A motorist reaching for the contents of a cooler that spilled in his van lost control of the vehicle, which rolled over, crashed and burst into flames Friday on State Highway 45 in Washington County, the sheriff's office said.
The 25-year-old West Bend man escaped from the vehicle after the crash, reported shortly after 7 a.m. south of State Highway 60 in the Town of Polk, according to a news release from the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
According to the release, the man was headed south at the time of the crash.
When members of the Jackson Fire Department arrived on the scene the van was fully engulfed in flames. As the firefighters fought the blaze several small explosions believed to have been caused by aerosol cans of paint erupted, throwing debris onto the southbound lanes and halting all southbound traffic.
Traffic in both directions was reduced to one lane and, for a short period of time, rerouted during the incident, in which police and firefighters were on the scene for about two hours.
The driver of the van faces tickets for inattentive driving and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended driver's license, according to the release.
