Glen Burnie, MD : Driver dies in collision on Interstate 97 in Glen Burnie on Wednesday, March 16, 2016

Maryland State Police on Thursday were still investigating the cause of a crash that killed a man a day earlier on Interstate 97 in Glen Burnie.

Firefighters and police responded just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday to southbound Interstate 97 and Dorsey Road for a reported motor vehicle collision.

Police found a 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe on the left shoulder of the road, which had struck the back of a stopped tow truck, police said. The driver of the Santa Fe, a 39-year-old man whose identity has not yet been released by police, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

In a preliminary investigation, police said they found the Santa Fe was traveling south when it drifted onto the left shoulder for an unknown reason. The Santa Fe struck a rollback tow truck parked on the left shoulder, which had been assisting an abandoned vehicle, police said.

A passenger in the vehicle, identified only as a 34-year-old woman, was taken to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with injuries that were series but not believed to be life-threatening, an Anne Arundel County Fire Department spokesman said.

The tow truck operator was not injured, police said.

The road was closed for roughly three hours and traffic was diverted onto Dorsey Road.

No additional information was available Thursday evening.
