ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, VA : Crews on scene of tractor-trailer wreck on I-81 in Rockbridge County on Wednesday, 11th November, 2020

The crash has been cleared, oil spill cleaned and lanes reopened. All northbound lanes are closed.

Traffic is being detoured off the 180 exit and the 188 exit. Traffic is taking route 60 to route 11 back onto I-64 and getting onto I-64 east onto I-81, according to VDOT.

The accident itself is cleaned up; the truck has been removed, according to Rockbridge Fire Chief Nathan Ramsey.

He said it was a minor accident; the truck slid into the left side guardrail, with no injury. But the guardrail tore into the fuel tank, releasing about 100 gallons of diesel that, in the rain, ran down the hill and across all lanes of traffic, making 81 slick.

Rain spread the fuel more and made cleanup difficult, said Ramsey. On a clear day, he said, they could have had it up pretty quickly with absorbent pads. The holdup now is because of throwing out sawdust and other absorbents to try to clear the fuel.
