ORANGE COUNTY, FL : FHP Tallahassee, FL : speaks about drowsy driving after Apopka teen struck, killed by car on Sunday, 18th September 2016
The family of Sanjay Nandram is heartbroken after troopers say the Apopka teen was hit and killed by a motorist who fell asleep at the wheel Sunday morning. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating, and said only when all the information is processed will troopers determine if the charges against the driver involve traffic violations or criminal charges.
Nandram was involved in a fender bender on the turnpike, pulled his car off the road and was standing outside on the passenger side when a 23-year-old woman veered off the turnpike and hit him.
"She robbed us today. Robbed the family. Everybody in the family," Nandram’s father, Mohabir Nandram, said.
Driving while drowsy is a huge problem, according to FHP Sgt. Kim Montes, “It is just as dangerous as people driving impaired."
There were just over 4,385 crashes that involved drowsy driving in 2015, the FHP said. Of those crashes, 1,373 people were injured and 23 people were killed.
Troopers said those numbers are probably low because many motorists don't admit they fell asleep at the wheel.
“When you feel yourself nodding off, it is time pull off the road because you have to realize that you are behind the wheel of a 5,000-bullet,” Montes said.
