McAllen, TX : Victim identified, driver charged, in connection with fatal Sunday crash in Weslaco on Sunday, 2nd October 2016
The victim in a fatal Sunday afternoon crash in Weslaco has been identified by the Weslaco Police Department.
Doris June Diaz, 46, of Weslaco, died at about 1:45 p.m. after being ejected from one vehicle and run over by another.
Diaz was a front-seat passenger in a PT Cruiser traveling northbound near International Boulevard and Pike Boulevard. The driver lost control, sending the car spinning and ejecting Diaz onto the road.
The driver of a Chevrolet HHR, identified as Ruben Mercado, 40, was driving southbound. The Weslaco resident ran over Diaz as she lay on the pavement, according to Weslaco PD. He was detained at the scene when officers arrived.
Mercado has since been arrested and was charged with intoxication manslaughter Monday afternoon in connection with Diaz's death. Municipal Court Judge Carlos Garza set his bond at $350,000 for the second-degree felony.
If found guilty, Mercado faces up to 20 years in prison and a possible fine of up to $10,000.
