Wright Township, MI : One killed, three critical after wrong-way freeway crash on Interstate 96 in Ottawa County on Friday afternoon, September 5, 2014
Wright Township, Michigan
An 81-year-old Grand Rapids woman was killed and three other people critically injured in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 96 in Ottawa County.
Sheriff's officials say Donna Laymon was in a car driven by her 83-year-old husband that went airborne Friday afternoon over a berm and onto a freeway exit ramp in Wright Township.
Leslie Laymon continued driving about 1,000 feet west in the freeway's eastbound lanes before slamming into a car driven by 80-year-old Donald Vanhoeven.
Donna Laymon was pronounced dead at the scene. Leslie Laymon, Donald Vanhoeven and Vanhoeven's 79-year-old wife, Shirley, were in critical condition.
Deputies say a preliminary investigation shows Leslie Laymon initially failed to yield and negotiate a curve on a surface street which caused his car to enter the freeway via the exit ramp.
