Mansfield, OH : Mom and 3 kids injured in single-car crash Thursday on July 17, 2014

Many people stopped to help when a mother and three children were hurt in a rollover crash Thursday.

Three juveniles — ages 6, 8 and 10 — and their mother were transported to OhioHealth MedCentral/Mansfield Hospital after a one-vehicle crash at U.S. 30 and 42.

Sgt. Adam Burkhart of the Ohio Highway Patrol’s Mansfield post said Cynthia Edwards of Richland County was traveling west on U.S. 30 when she apparently lost control of her vehicle and crossed the median into the eastbound lanes, rolling the car at least three times.

The extent of injuries was not immediately known, but rescue personnel from Madison Township assisted the two girls in a grassy area after their mother and brother had been taken to MedCentral. The girls were loaded into ambulances, too.

Several good Samaritans stopped to help the family members, all of whom had been either fully or partially ejected from the vehicle, Burkhart said.

Cody Britt and Matt Schaefer of Britts Landscaping were traveling behind Edwards on U.S. 30 and saw the crash. They pulled over, jumped out and rushed across the median to help the occupants of the vehicle.

The vehicle started smoking, Britt said.

“I never want to see this again,” Britt said. His coworker said he called 911 and both of them began to assist the family members. The mother lay on the pavement.

Britt said the children were crying and alert when he and Schaefer approached the car.

“We pulled a couple of the kids out,” he said.

Britt said it was his first time rescuing anyone at a crash.

“We just wanted to help,” he said.

Mansfield family counselor Herb Ross came to the scene to see if he could help the family. The children attend his after-school program.

He said he spoke with their mother Thursday morning about coming to his church event, Christmas in July, at New Jerusalem Church.

“She works at Wal-Mart in Ontario on third shift,” he said.

Burkhart said he expected to issue several citations to the woman, including lack of child safety seats.

The driver had severe injuries to her legs, he said.

“A lot of people stopped to help. I was the fourth person on scene,” Burkhart said.
