Rutland, VT : Bennington woman dies in Pittsfield crash on Friday evening, March 10, 2017
A Bennington woman is dead following a motor vehicle crash in Pittsfield.
Vermont State Police say 23-year-old Kalene McGurn was traveling north on Route 100 Friday evening in icy conditions when her vehicle went over the centerline and was hit by an oncoming pickup truck driven by Robert C. Towle II, of Rutland, who was unable to avoid her Toyota 4Runner.
McGurn was trapped in the vehicle for a short time, and comforted by people at the scene and Towle, before being extricated from the vehicle, police said. Shortly after she was removed, her truck caught fire and was totally consumed.
McGurn was taken by White River Valley Ambulance to the Rutland Regional Medical Center, where she died of her injuries.
Towle was not injured, although his truck was totaled.
Killington Police Department, Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles, Pittsfield Fire Department, several off-duty first responders, and several bystanders at the scene helped Vermont State Police.
The crash was one of more than 10 reported in the Rutland area, in Sudbury, Pittsford, Clarendon and Mendon between 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. as snow squalls and fast-dropping temperatures moved through the area, creating black ice conditions.
