Albuquerque, NM : Woman critically injured after rollover crash on Paseo Del Norte Bridge over Coors Blvd. on Sunday evening, March 29, 2015
A woman was severely injured Sunday evening when the Jeep she was driving nearly fell off the Paseo Del Norte Bridge over Coors Blvd. around 5:45 p.m.
Police have not released the driver’s name, but said Sunday evening she was in surgery with life-threatening injuries.
Witnesses say the woman was convulsing and not talking when paramedics transported her into the ambulance.
Crash investigators said the man riding in the passenger side of the Jeep was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Witnesses saw the man be pulled out of the Jeep, but was walking and talking after that. His name has not been released either.
An eyewitness said the driver lost control of the Jeep after a passenger-side tire popped.
"I heard the explosion. I turned around and tire was going everywhere; then all of a sudden, she swerved, she hit the guardrail and started rolling," Jay said.
Jay said the Jeep flipped several times, and said the woman driver flew out of the vehicle.
"She lost control,” Jay said. “She overcorrected, swerved, hit the guardrail on this side, and rolled six times. She was ejected and ended up ten feet from where the Jeep is now."
He and others then scaled the concrete wall to go help the woman and man in the Jeep.
"By then, everyone else was scampering up the overpass, calling 911 [and] freaking out, panicking," Jay said.
Police believe the woman was not wearing her seatbelt and her passenger was wearing his when the accident occurred.
The crash caused traffic to be diverted off of Paseo Del Norte westbound lanes for much of the evening.
