Fort Myers, FL : 55-year-old man died after hit by a motorcycle on US-41 in North Fort Myers on Thursday night, December 10, 2015

A 55-year-old Fort Myers man died after he was hit by a motorcycle while crossing US-41 in North Fort Myers Thursday night.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol Luke Galasso was near the intersection of Cabana Avenue when he walked into the path of a Suzuki motorcycle just before 7 p.m.

Galasso was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver of the motorcycle, 47-year-old Emilio Arteaga, of Cape Coral, was transported to Lee Memorial in critical condition.

Witnesses are still trying to cope with what they saw.

"They were speeding, lost control, fishtailed, and crashed up there," said Jeanine Schroeder. "I ran over as quick as I could."

There is no crosswalk where the crash happened. The closest place to cross is at Pondella Road, which is at the stop light.

"Shaken really bad. It's nerve-wracking to see that," said Brandon Dearmond. "When I got there, one was laying dead."

The northbound lanes of Tamiami Trail were blocked off for several hours after the crash but have since reopened.
