A beloved Providence teacher was struck and killed by a car Wednesday night.
School officials say 63-year-old Anne-Marie Dansicker, a special needs teacher at Mount Pleasant High School, was struck outside the school around 5 p.m. Dansicker was leaving an after school club meeting when she was hit. She was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.
The driver, identified as 19-year-old Tarchae Powell, initially left the scene, but police say Powell turned herself Wednesday evening. She is charged with due care by operator and failure to yield right of way to pedestrian in a crosswalk.
Students and faculty of the school are heartbroken at the news of Dansicker's passing.
"When I heard it, I just couldn't stop the tears from coming," says student, Lovetta Gaye.
Mount Pleasant Principal, Donald Robello, told ABC6 that though Dansicker had only been a teacher at the school for the past two years, she left an impact on everyone.
"She meant so much to every student. She was so helping. She was probably the most positive woman in the school," says student, Neda Nacar. "She just wanted to see us cross that stage, that's what she wanted all the time. So, I just want everyone to remember that and keep working."
According to the Communications Director of Providence Schools, the hit-and-run suspect has turned herself into police. No further information has been released.
Superintendent Christopher N. Maher released a statement Thursday evening, saying,
"This morning we received the tragic news that Anne-Marie Dansicker, a teacher at Mt. Pleasant High School, succumbed to injuries sustained when she was struck by a motor vehicle while leaving work yesterday evening.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Anne-Marie’s loved ones and countless members of the Providence school community whose lives she touched during her years of service.
The School Department has counselors at Mt. Pleasant High School and is committed to offering students, teachers and staff support in this difficult time."
