HALSEY, OR : One dead in 2-car crash near Halsey on Monday, 29th August, 2016
The Linn County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal car crash at the intersection of Lake Creek Drive and Powerline Road that occurred near Halsey at about 1:40 p.m. Monday.
Rhoda Fern Showalter, 65, of Harrisburg was killed in the crash. Alfredo Garcia-Gomez, 19, of Junction City, the driver of the other car in the accident, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis and had minor injuries.
The drivers were the only occupants of the vehicles.
According to the Linn county Sheriff’s report, Garcia-Gomez was traveling south on Powerline Road in a black 1998 Honda Civic as Showalter was driving east on Lake Creek Drive in a blue 2005 Chevrolet Ventura van.
As Showalter entered the intersection, Garcia-Gomez drove through the stop sign and collided with Showalter’s van. Her vehicle spun as a result, crashing into and damaging a power pole.
Garcia-Gomez’s vehicle came to a rest on the west side of the roadway about 50 yards south of the intersection on Powerline Road.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts, and airbags in both vehicles deployed. At this point in the investigation, alcohol or other drugs are not considered to have played a role in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
Linn County Deputies were assisted by members of the Halsey Fire Department and Albany Fire EMT personnel. In addition, the Linn County Multi Agency Investigation Team members from the Linn County Sheriff's Office and the Lebanon Police Department responded to assist with the processing of the crash scene.
Lake Creek Drive and Powerline Road were closed in all directions at the intersection for several hours. Power utility crews were on scene, along with personnel from the Halsey-Shedd Rural Fire District. Investigators interviewed a witness who saw the collision.
This is the second fatal crash in three days in Linn County. Several other injury wrecks occurred in the last week, including on Interstate 5.
