MANKATO, MN : Minnesota boy dies in accidental hanging in thrift store on Saturday, March 18th 2017
A young boy alone in the dressing room of a thrift store got his hooded sweat shirt tangled with a clothing hook, accidentally hanging himself, reports say.
The Mankato Free Press reports the boy, Ryu S. Pena, 4, was found unresponsive in the dressing room of Again Thrift & More late Saturday afternoon.
Rescue workers were unable to revive the boy, who was declared dead at a hospital.
According to KARE Channel 11, Ryu was shopping with his grandmother when the accident occurred.
"It wasn't neglect. He was having fun. He was playing. He was being a kid," the boy's mother, Denise Gonzalez, tells KARE. "It could happen to anybody at any time. "We just borrowed him for a little while and got to know him. He got to touch a lot of people. He was a star."
Police tell the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that no charges are expected to be filed.
A GoFundMe page is raising money for Ryu's funeral expenses.
Ryu's death was not the only accidental strangling involving a young boy in the past few days. In Philadelphia, John Bruno, 5, died Saturday at a hospital days after being choked by a family dog pulling on his scarf as they played in the snow, CBS News reports.
