Statesboro, GA : Two single-vehicle accidents on Tuesday December 6th, 2016
Two single-vehicle accidents Tuesday morning that happened one after another on Highway 80 East near Stilson led to the death of one driver, Richard Mason, 22, Packinghouse Road, Statesboro.
Bulloch County Deputy Coroner Richard Pylant said if the second accident had not occurred, it could have been some time before anyone discovered the first.
Georgia State Patrol Post 45 trooper reports were incomplete Wednesday, but Pylant said a driver hydroplaned around 6 a.m. on Highway 80 East near T.E. Glisson Road, and the vehicle landed in a creek.
EMS and other responders arrived at the scene to find the unidentified driver already out of his vehicle. However, barely visible underwater in the rain-swollen creek was a 2003 Toyota Tacoma, Pylant said.
Mason was found inside the truck, which was upside down underwater. Attempts by EMTs to resuscitate him were unsuccessful, according to incomplete GSP reports.
Pylant said it is not yet determined how Mason died, but it is believed he, too, hydroplaned into the creek just before the other vehicle. It is assumed Mason drowned, he said
