Rochester, NY : Two men killed in Alexander Street crash on Monday morning, November 10, 2014
Two men were killed in a one-car crash early Monday morning on Alexander Street, north of Main Street, in Rochester. We are still waiting for police to official release their names but family members tell us 23-year-old James Anderson and 28-year-old Marcus Weems, both of Rochester, were killed instantly.
The crash scene has been clear for several hours now but people continue to drive by and take pictures of a tree in front of 465 Alexander Street. The bark was stripped off after the car carrying the two cousins slammed into it.
The man who lives next door to the crash scene told his boss he would be late to work because he needed to clean up his front yard. There is a lot of broken glass and car parts scattered everything. Jake Waters Junior said, "You're talking damage up to 60 feet away and I didn't hear the impact so maybe it was a blessing that I didn't hear it and I wouldn't see what happened."
Police say it was around 1 a.m. that the driver, going north on Alexander Street lost control, and slammed into a tree after hitting a utility pole. It took several hours to extricate the bodies from the vehicle. Dozens of family and friends gathered to console each other at the scene, telling News10NBC the victims were cousins who always hung out together. Family members tell us Anderson was driving.
A neighbor who watched as the vehicle was taken away on a flatbed says he was in disbelief when he turned on the news this morning. Wayde Holmes said, "To just see breaking news and see one of my friends face on TV is like a reality check. All I know is they were real close. They got so many friends and family all around the neighborhood."
Witnesses told police the driver was going very fast with tires squealing as the car made its way onto Alexander Street from a side street. Right now, it's unclear if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
