COVINGTON, GA : Newton County deputy involved in crash Sunday remains in ICU on Sunday, 30th October 2016
The Georgia State Patrol is investigating a single vehicle accident involving a Newton County Sheriff’s deputy that occurred early in the morning on Oct. 30. The deputy, identified as Justin White, 28, of Covington, is in ICU at Atlanta Medical Center.
White was responding to a medical emergency call when the accident occurred, according to Sgt. Cortney Morrison of the Sheriff’s Office.
According to a release from the State Patrol, the Sheriff’s Office called them for assistance with the accident investigation about 2:34 a.m.
“The marked Newton County Sheriff Department patrol vehicle, with emergency equipment activated, was traveling south on Ga. Highway 162 negotiating a curve,” the release stated. “The right side tires left the roadway and entered the west shoulder before reentering the southbound lane of Ga. Highway 162. The driver lost control and eventually struck an embankment and overturned coming to an uncontrolled rest on its roof on the south shoulder of Mote Road, facing east. (The) deputy was extricated from his vehicle and transported to Atlanta Medical Center. There was no air bag deployment and the driver was not wearing his safety belt.”
The Sheriff’s Office issued the following statement Monday.
“Deputy Justin White is still in intensive care (ICU) at Atlanta Medical Center and is scheduled for surgery tomorrow. There are no visitors outside of immediate family at this time. Please keep Deputy White and his family in your thoughts and prayers as we all are doing as his NCSO family.”
White has been with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office since 2012, initially working in the detention center. In March 2015 he transferred to the patrol division.
