Blackman Township, MI : Man injured in three-vehicle crash on I-94 near Airport Road on Friday afternoon, March 4, 2016
A 22-year-old man with a head injury that was not considered critical was taken to Allegiance Health following a three-vehicle crash Friday afternoon on I-94 near Airport Road.
The crash was one of several reported between about 3:30 and 4 p.m. March 4 on the eastbound side of the highway.
The 22-year-old was driving east in a small car about 4 p.m. when another eastbound vehicle did not slow for a traffic backup and rear-ended the car, pushing it into an SUV, Michigan State Police Trooper Todd Waite said. The man "will be OK," he said.
No others were injured.
Emergency workers had to cut the 22-year-old out of the car, which was badly damaged. The car behind it also had significant damage, mostly to its front end. The SUV appeared to be largely unaffected.
The eastbound lanes west of Airport Road were closed for a time while emergency personnel were on the scene of the crash. Police then opened one lane and vehicle moved slowly past the crash.
All lanes were again closed about 4:50 p.m. as wrecker service trucks hauled away the two cars. Emergency vehicles left the site at 5 p.m. and vehicles began moving steadily through the area.
Traffic had initially slowed on the highway because of three preceding crashes being handled by the Blackman-Leoni Township public safety department.
The first was reported at 3:37 p.m. near Cooper Street and involved three vehicles. There was then another crash at the same location and a third crash reported about 10 minutes later at 127 north, according to police.
No one was hurt in the earlier incidents.
