Fort Dodge, IA : A Fort Dodge man was seriously injured in a Figure 8 racing crash on Saturday, June 3, 2017
A Fort Dodge man was seriously injured in a Figure 8 racing crash at the Webster County Fairgrounds Saturday night.
Brad Hanse, 39, of Fort Dodge, was competing in the race when another driver apparently slammed into the driver’s side door of his car, according to his wife, Andrea Hanse.
Andrea Hanse was watching the races from the pit, she said.
Track officials estimated the car hit Brad’s vehicle at about 50 mph, according to Andrea Hanse.
Brad Hanse had to be extricated from the vehicle by first responders, she said.
“They had to cut through the car and cut through the roll cage,” Andrea Hanse said.
Brad Hanse was transported to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center by ambulance. He was later airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
He is recovering from multiple injuries.
According to Andrea Hanse, he suffered a broken arm, shattered pelvis, shattered left hip, and a broken femur.
He also suffered lacerations to his arm and injuries to his left knee.
Brad Hanse was in intensive care as of Sunday night.
He was reported to be in stable condition.
Brad Hanse was wearing the proper safety equipment at the time of the crash, including a helmet, according to Andrea Hanse.
“One of the nurses at Trinity said if he had not had his helmet on he wouldn’t be here,” Andrea Hanse said.
The other car was not heavily damaged, she said.
All drivers are required to sign a waiver prior to competing.
Dayton Ambulance was on scene at the time of the crash.
Brad Hanse has been involved in Figure 8 racing for more than 20 years, Andrea Hanse said.
Brad Hanse works as an auto mechanic at Al’s Auto Repair in Fort Dodge.
“He loves to work on race cars and working in the garage after work,” Andrea Hanse said. “It’s not like to him to be down. It’s upsetting to see him with so many tubes and wires and not be able to do anything.”
She has appreciated the community’s support.
“People from Fort Dodge and the racing family have been so wonderful, calling and reaching out,” she said. “It’s really great that all these people can race against each other on the track, but when something like this happens they all pull together.”
Andrea Hanse and Brad Hanse have one daughter, Aubree, who is 3.
He has two stepsons, Eli, 16, and Calvin, 13.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover medical expenses for the Hanse family.
